Atlantic Northwest - Ireland

The 'Atlantic Northwest' style is a compilation of inspiration created by Karen Mackay for a specific client look. Taking on a project in County Mayo for an Irish couple that was well travelled and had impeccable personal style was a joy. The husband had started with a plot of land and a local international architect to build the shell of a modern stone & render, upside-down property (living upstairs, bedrooms down stairs). Once engaged, his future wife's style was far more layered and traditional. Combining their divergent styles meant we needed to find common ground. They were living in New York City at the time, traveling into New England and the Hampton's so they were open to stepping 'outside of the box' for the look of this unique Irish home with lake views in County Mayo.

Here are some of the unique details that really speak to a curated 'Atlantic Northwest Style from texture and simplicity to a curated vision:

      • Vaulted ceilings painted in the same creamy white for both ceilings and walls.
      • Painted window framing (getting away from the typical 'orange' window frames so often seen in Ireland. We choose a warm grey to frame but not distract from the stunning lake and distant mountain views.
      • Adding a wide, thick vertical v-groove board on the central stair well with solid half walls instead of railings. The same vertical board wall used in the entry, mantle and mudroom to repeat the theme and add architectural character to an empty modern shell.
      • Choosing unique 5 paneled & painted doors with higher shaker skirting and door architrave ,also painted the same warm grey as the vertical board and windows.
      • High-end kitchen cabinetry showcased at the end of the room in a stepped fashion, a large kitchen island in V-groove board with honed Carerra marble counters and subway tile.
      • Natural oak table, breakfront furniture.
      • Bathrooms with subway tile, luxurious vanities and high end fixtures.
      • Seagrass feature wallcoverings in the master bedroom and powder room.
      • Finishing touches of pillowed limestone tiles in the entry and mudroom, natural stained solid oak, wide floorboards.
      • Satin &pitted finished, in white bronze hardware from Rocky Mountain Hardware in the USA, along with polished nickel cabinet hardware and lighting. Pierced tin Morrocan style pendants in the Greatroom and end cut wood in the livingroom's firebox for effect.

If you are looking to enhance your own home with an Irish inspired - Atlantic Northwest style, look to the finishes you choose that have a good 'hand'. From linen, limestone, natural woods, woven textures, faux fur, bright accent colours, and lots of green in natural finishes, authentic to the Irish North west!
